I hosted Ms. Yuto Iizuka, an international Ph.D. student from Prof. Takeshi Akasaka’s laboratory at Tsukuba University, Japan, between June 1, 2007 and September 30, 2007, to carry out reverse-demand Diels-Alder reactions with endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) to achieve the opening of these intriguing fullerene derivatives. She carried out her first reactions between 3,6-bis(4-t-butylphenyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine and Sc3C2@C80 (as well as with three other EMFs), which ultimately led to a publication in the Journal of the American Chemical Society:

Regina Eigler (née Neubauer)
I hosted Ms. Regina Eigler, an international master student from the University of Erlangen, Germany, to carry out part of her Masters Thesis research at UCLA between December 15, 2009 and June 30, 2010. She was an undergraduate researcher with Professors Norbert Jux and Andreas Hirsch at Erlangen. She worked in my group on developing novel self-assembling, redder-light-absorbing fullerenes (derivatives of azafullerenes) to function as electron acceptors in novel photovoltaic devices (organic solar cells). She recently filed her Ph.D. thesis with results generated in part at UCLA. One publication from our side of the collaboration has resulted from her stay at UCLA.

I hosted Mr. Hiroki Kurihara, an international Ph.D. student from Prof. Takeshi Akasaka’s laboratory at Tsukuba University, Japan, between February 25, 2012 and March 19, 2012, to continue our collaboration with Prof. Akasaka performing reverse-demand Diels-Alder reactions with endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) to achieve the opening of these intriguing fullerene derivatives.
